APX - [MX] ('The Archangel Michael') St. Michael standing facing on dais, in military dress, nimbate, holding sword in his right hand and placing his left on scabbard. Rev. [APX]ICTPA/[THΓЄ] TAΓMA/[TⲰN OV]PANIⲰN / [ANΔPONI]KⲰN CK/[ЄΠOIC M]Є TON / [BACIΛ]ЄA in six lines ('General of the Regiments of Heaven, may you protect me, Andronikos the basileus'). Wassiliou Seibt, Corpus 155. Zacos/Veglery 2757. Cheynet, Zacos III 21. A Palaeologean seal of great historical interest. Halved and some scrapes, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, acquired before 2021.

Cheynet follows the earlier attribution of Zacos/Veglery to the emperor Andronicus II. In her edition of the seal type, Wassiliou-Seibt also considers an attribution to Andronikos III (1328-1341) or Andronikos IV (1376-1379).
